Some Therapy!

A friend told me today about her husband's recent therapy session.

The husband has been having sleep problems, which doesn't make anyone cheerful. During the session, his therapist, a PHD, said to him, "You are mentally ill."

"What do you mean by that?" said the patient. The psych's reply? "Your time is up!" and he escorted him out of the clinic.

Some therapy!

Yes, today's psychiatrist is not trained to listen, they are certified in prescribing drugs for the corresponding "mental illness" listed in the DSM. Listening and caring about the patient is not part of treatment.

THERE IS MORE TO SUCCESS THAN MOTIVATION!

When they hear "success" most people think about money. Not only because we live in a materialistic world, but because money means survival:

better food, shelter and clothing, more opportunity and freedom of choice. So money represents success when you have it and failure when you don't.

Most of my clients are professionals and business people. They are success driven and are knowledgeable in their field. There are two areas, however, that might hold anyone back.

One is distractions: a turbulent home life, relationship problems, kids in trouble, someone breathing down your neck, too much alcohol to try

and cope with the person breathing down your neck, etc.   In spite of

having all the knowledge and ability to achieve success, distractions could spell failure. There are, however, effective ways to remove such distractions, and that's my specialty.

>The other area is "tools":  more knowledge, not of your own trade - you already have that - but of organizing, planning and executing your vision; taking those dreams and turning them into reality.

That's what I help my clients with. And that's why I say: "THERE IS MORE TO SUCCESS THAN MOTIVATION!"

Why I am not a proponent of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), HYPNOSIS, and such...

Don't you think we are "programmed" enough; in fact, OVER programmed?!

From the day we were born we've been told what to do, where to go, what's good, who's bad, what we should study, and what kind of future we should create for ourselves. We've been analyzed and evaluated. Parents, teachers, therapists, employers and friends tried to modify our behavior and "program" or "condition" us to their way of thinking. Not out of malice, necessarily, but anyone who is in a rut might be comforted to know he is not alone.

As for hypnosis - have you ever driven a car behind someone who acted like he was half-asleep? Have you ever watched TV an hour too long just to get up off the couch in sort of a trance? Hypno-"therapy" puts us to sleep. Aren't we "hypnotized" enough by computers, TV and even our own phones? To be happy and successful we have to be wide awake!

I have never had a client improve his life by doing as others say or by letting someone else control and sedate their mind as in hypnotherapy.

Being in control of your thoughts, actions and decisions is freedom. And freedom is a necessary component of happiness.

The other day I spoke to (let's call him "Bill"): Grandson has been living with them, Bill said, and all is well. He has a job and helps around the house; only thing is, for some strange reason, all his friends are drug users.

"Is he on drugs?" I asked. "I don't think so," said Bill. "Then drug test!" I said.

That was not to be. Bill's wife is the one caring for the 19-year-old and she would never do that, he said.

That's a common mistake! Sober people don't have drug users for friends
- at least not all their friends! When a red flag is blowing in the wind, when indicators are there, like a lump that signals the existence of a tumor, denial would get you nowhere.

What's the right attitude about a suspicion? You can't do anything about a problem you refuse to see is there. So you need to dig in there and discover the truth. It may not be pretty, but you'll be able to do something about it.
